What is it?
A Zentangle tile is created by drawing patterns that look complex though they are achieved with a series of simple, usually repetitive, lines drawn one at a time without regard to the end product. Created by artists Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas, Zentangle as a method is a tool that can benefit and be employed by both artists and non-artists, young and old. There is no wrong way to create a Zentangle, so anyone who can hold a pencil can do it.
How do I do it?
At first, simple patterns called tangles are drawn one step at a time using a special archival quality pen in a lightly penciled outline called a string on a square card called a tile. Once the simplicity of tangling is apparent, the surfaces and implements that can be used become limited only by your passion and imagination. Anything is possible… one stroke at a time™.
Why would I do it?
With emphasis placed on the process, not the end product, self-judgment is suspended and psychological doors are opened. Thus, Zentangle has been found useful for stimulating creative flow, achieving relaxed focus (or meditation), calming stress, focusing attention (even in children with ADD), for corporate team building and is just plain fun. There are no mistakes in Zentangle; no chance to do anything “wrong,” which builds self-confidence in many other areas of life. And you get a neat looking unique piece of art that you can say you did yourself!
What we’ll be doing at the Open House:
Beginners and veteran tanglers alike are invited to this informal ‘class’ where you can work on a project of your choice:
Each project requires a small materials fee in addition to the class fee of $25, (beginners will also need to purchase an introductory kit - $10, veteran tanglers, please bring yours) which includes use of instructor’s pens, markers, etc; a “Cliff’s Notes” introduction for beginners; instruction on several tangles; access to the instructor for your tangling questions and tutoring, and light party refreshments. As always, additional materials and books will be available for purchase.
Projects range in price from 55 cents for a color splash tile to $4.50 for a tangled glass ball ornament. You can also choose to tangle a snowflake on a black tile (75 cents) or tangle and fold puffed paper star ornament ($1.00)
NOTE: Quantities of each item will be limited!
